Reviving the old performance Shadow Puppet? that Dieter Vandoren and I started in 2013 and launch of publication Blueprint IV.
In Shadow Puppet?, the human and the machine come together. Two performers — one behind machines and one in the spotlight — play a light-to-sound instrument, creating a dynamic tension of attraction and repulsion. This gives rise to an engulfing play of light, shadow and raw optical sound, and it is never quite clear who is conducting whom.
Blueprint #4: ‘Shadow Puppet?’
The Blueprint Series presents detailed documentation of works by iii artists. Each booklet is an instruction manual with which you can delve deep into the background of a different performative sound artwork or interactive sound installation. Similar to a musical score, The Blueprint Series intends to preserve performative and staged works of sound art, as the works themselves are in danger of disappearing with the creator.
Mariska de Groot and Dieter Vandoren revive Shadow Puppet?, a performance they collaboratively made 10 years ago, engulfing the play of light, shadow and raw optical sound. Accompanying the performance, iii presents a special publication called Blueprint, revealing details of their dialogue, their motivation, technique and expertise in embodied performance and analogue machinery.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
iii x Korzo
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall is a mini-festival featuring performances, videos and installations exploring the fragile relationship between humans and technology. Humans made tools to assist them and created technological devices in their own image (like AI), but these creations have started to deform, talk back, and take on a life of their own.
These artworks confront us with our deepest desire for control and show us the beauty of reciprocity. We gave birth to technology, and even if it outgrows us or rebels against us, we must take care of it.
Featuring works by Jonathan Chaim Reus & Jaap Blonk, Marina Orlova, Jorrit Paaijmans, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Cihad Caner, Douglas Davis, Mariska de Groot & Dieter Vandoren, John Dewey College.
ARE WE LOSING OUR GRASP ON THE THINGS WE CREATED TO ASSIST US?
DOES THE MIRROR KNOW US BETTER THAN WE KNOW OURSELVES?
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall is a collaboration between Korzo and iii. Curated by Sanneke Huisman.
