STIRRED MANDALA II

Stirred Mandala is a light and sound performance emerging from Mariska’s ongoing research into optical sound, interfering patterns, and the interplay of spiral movements in both body and machine.

A spinning tone wheel projects intricate patterns onto the floor, forming a luminous, ever-shifting rug of light. This dynamic surface becomes an instrument for the performer, who interacts with it using light-to-sound transducers as playful and responsive tools. As the frequencies of light change, the projection morphs – patterns shift, reverse, and dissolve – creating an illusion of movement that is mirrored in sound.

The performance’s sonic landscape is raw and textural, shaped by a simple modular synthesizer that directly controls the light. The result is a noisy, 8-bit-style sound that contrasts with the hypnotic, flickering patterns. As visual rhythms and sonic pulses intertwine, Stirred Mandala invites the audience into an immersive experience where light and sound become one fluid, ever-evolving entity.

Stirred Mandala II was developed during an artist in residency in A4, Bratislava.
